It can react with acids to form salts. There is hydrolysis. Condensation reaction can be carried out at high temperature to produce biuret, biuret and cyanuric acid. When heated to 160 ºC, it is named urea. The nitrogen (n) content of urea is 46%, which is the highest among solid nitrogen fertilizers.
For thermal instability, heating to 150 ~ 160 ºC will deamination to biuret. If heated rapidly, it will be deamination and trimerized into a six membered ring compound, cyanuric acid. (mechanism: first deamination to form isocyanic acid (HN = C = O), and then trimerization.)
It reacts with diethyl malonate to form malonylurea (also known as barbituric acid, because it has certain acidity).
Urea is easily soluble in water, and can dissolve 105 grams in 100 ml of water at 20 ºC. The aqueous solution shows a neutral reaction. There are two kinds of urea products. The crystalline urea is in the form of white acicular or prismatic crystal with strong hygroscopicity. Granular urea is a translucent particle with a particle size of 1-2mm. Its appearance is bright and clean, and its hygroscopicity is significantly improved. At 20 ºC, the critical moisture absorption point is 80% of the relative humidity, but at 30 ºC, the critical moisture absorption point drops to 72.5%. Therefore, urea should not be stored open in the humid climate in midsummer. At present, hydrophobic substances such as paraffin wax are added to urea production, which greatly reduces its moisture absorption.
Main applications
Medical applications:
Dermatology uses certain agents containing urea to increase the humidity of the skin. The sealing dressing used for non-surgical nail removal contains 40% urea.
The carbon-14-breath test for testing the presence of Helicobacter pylori uses urea containing carbon 14 or carbon 13 labels. . The same principle can also be used to test similar bacteria living in the stomach of animals.
Agricultural applications:
Urea is a kind of high concentration nitrogen fertilizer, which is a neutral and quick acting fertilizer. It can also be used to produce a variety of compound fertilizers. There is no harmful substance left in the soil, and long-term application has no adverse effect. Animal husbandry can be used as feed for ruminants. However, if the temperature is too high during granulation, a small amount of biuret, also known as biuret, will be produced, which has an inhibitory effect on crops. China stipulates that the biuret content of urea for fertilizer should be less than 0.5%. When the biuret content exceeds 1%, it cannot be used as seed fertilizer, seedling fertilizer and leaf fertilizer, and the urea content in other application periods should not be too much or too concentrated.
Urea is an organic nitrogen fertilizer, which can be absorbed and used by crops only after it is hydrolyzed into ammonium carbonate or ammonium bicarbonate by urease in the soil. Therefore, urea should be applied 4-8 days before the fertilizer period of crops.
Commercial applications:
Raw materials of special plastics, especially urea formaldehyde resin
Raw materials of some gums
Composition of fertilizer and feed
Instead of antifreezing, salt is sprinkled on the streets, which has the advantage of preventing metal corrosion
Enhance the smell of cigarettes
Brown industrial Pretzels
Ingredients of some shampoos and detergents
The composition of the first-aid refrigeration package, because the reaction between urea and water will absorb heat
Treatment of exhaust gas from diesel engines, engines and thermal power plants, especially the reduction of nitrogen oxides
Composition of rain catalyst
In the past, it was used to separate paraffin because urea can form inclusion compounds
Refractory
Composition of environmentally friendly engine fuel
Ingredients of tooth whitening products
Chemical fertilizer
Important auxiliary agent in dyeing and printing
Laboratory application:
Urea can denature proteins very effectively, especially break non covalent proteins. This feature can improve the solubility of some proteins, and the concentration can reach 10 mol / volume.
Feed additives:
The shortage of human food resources and protein has also caused a major problem in the feed industry. The industry is actively looking for new sources of protein and expanding to other sources of nitrogen, such as urea, which has a high nitrogen content.
In 1897, waesk et al. Proposed the idea that ruminants could convert non protein nitrogen into bacterial protein. In 1949, C J. Watson et al. Fed sheep with N15 labeled urea capsules. Four days later, proteins containing N15 were detected in the blood, liver and kidney of sheep. This confirms that ruminants can utilize non protein nitrogen. In the same year, J. K. looli et al. Fed sheep with urea as the only nitrogen source, and found that sheep could achieve positive nitrogen balance, indicating that microorganisms in sheep rumen could synthesize 10 essential amino acids required for their growth by using urea. Since then, urea and urea compounds have become feed additives for ruminants.
Application in cosmetics:
Urea is a very useful moisturizing ingredient, which exists in the cuticle of the skin and belongs to the main component of NMF, the natural moisturizing factor of the skin. For the skin, urea has the effect of moisturizing and softening cuticle, so it can also prevent the cuticle from blocking pores, thereby improving the problem of acne. It is used to add moisturizing ingredients in facial mask, skin care water, cream, hand cream and other products. The addition ratio is 3-5%.
Industrial applications:
It can enhance the luster of chemical polishing of steel and stainless steel, and is used as a corrosion inhibitor in metal pickling, as well as in the preparation of palladium activation solution.
